The Legacy of Gulab Chakkar

Gulab Chakkar, nestled in the heart of Ratlam, is a historic circular monument build in 1879 by King Ranjit Singh, named after his daughter Gulab Kunwar. Known for its symmetrical beauty, regal architecture and cultural significance, Gulab Chakkar has stood as a silent witness to the city’s glorious past and vibrant traditions.

The 7 Quintal Stone: A Historic Feat

This massive 7 quintal stone is a silent testimony to a unique historical event—when renowned wrestler Gulam Mohammad carried it on his chest in 1900 during a royal event. Now placed at Gulab Chakkar, it symbolizes Ratlam’s rich legacy of valor, strength, and royal patronage of traditional sports.

From Neglect

Years of neglect and lack of maintenance had left Gulab Chakkar in a deteriorated state. The historic monument, once a vibrant centerpiece of Ratlam’s cultural life, showed visible signs of wear — fading structure, broken lights, damaged pathways, and an overall loss of charm. The legacy of this heritage site risked being forgotten.

To Glory

Thanks to the collective efforts of Ratlam’s Archaeology, Tourism & Culture Council and local community support, Gulab Chakkar has been beautifully restored to its original glory. The monument now gleams with restored architectural details, vibrant night lighting, clean surroundings, and renewed cultural energy — once again becoming a proud symbol of the city’s heritage.
